What Does a Claw Machine Power Supply Do?
A power supply takes mains AC input and provides DC outputs for the machine's compatible components. The power inlet, switch, fuse, and AC input side of the supply are mains-voltage areas; the board, player controls, lights, and motors use model-specific low-voltage circuits downstream. Do not assume every cabinet uses the same output voltages or that the mainboard distributes all power to every component.
Know Which Output Serves Which Component
In Hiclawcrane systems, a supply can provide 5V, 12V, 24V, and 48V DC outputs. The mainboard generally uses 5V DC. The 12V output commonly serves illuminated joysticks, illuminated buttons, and prize or win lights. Gantry motors are not universally 48V: some use 24V and others use 48V, depending on the compatible board and supply. The 25.7cm mini system is a separate compatibility class whose supply generally provides 5V, 12V, and 24V.
Do not assume all coin acceptors, sensors, audio parts, or claw assemblies use a single voltage without checking their labels and the kit diagram. The power supply, board, harness, motor, and connector ratings must match. A 12V board supply or a single 12V power supply is not a general specification for these machines.
How Load Is Distributed
The supply provides separate rated outputs for the components in the particular cabinet. Some circuits may be controlled or driven through the board or associated circuitry; others may take power through different paths. Use the specific wiring diagram rather than a universal claim that all power first goes to the mainboard and then to every motor and accessory.
Motor operation can change electrical load during play. Unexpected resets or erratic motion can have several causes, including a supply, connector, drive, or mechanical problem. A properly selected supply must be rated for the real loads on each output, but no supply can be promised to have zero voltage change under every load condition.
What to Check When Power Behavior Changes
- Cabinet does not start: record which indicators are off and check for visible damage or a disconnected external power lead. Do not assume the board or fuse is bad.
- Board resets during play: note when it occurs and which motor or accessory is active. A qualified technician can diagnose the rated DC outputs, connections, and load using the actual service procedure; do not assume a 12V rail is at fault.
- Movement is weak or uneven: inspect for a mechanical obstruction or damaged connection as well as a possible electrical fault.
- Burning smell, heat, damaged insulation, or exposed wiring: stop using the machine, disconnect it safely, and arrange qualified inspection. Do not open the supply or rely on a fixed waiting time to make internal capacitors safe.
Choosing a Replacement Supply
Record the exact supply model, AC input rating, each DC output voltage and current rating, connector and pinout, protection requirements, physical mounting, and the loads connected to each output. A replacement must be compatible with the whole machine, not just have the same wattage or a higher current number on one rail. The input rating of the supply alone does not prove the entire cabinet is ready for another country's mains system.
Do not use a generic PC power supply, extend wiring, or connect a replacement by matching wire color without a model-specific design review. Mains wiring, opening a supply, live electrical tests, and replacement of the supply should be done by qualified personnel following the actual equipment instructions and local rules. Disconnecting power and waiting a stated number of seconds is not proof that stored energy inside a supply has dissipated.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a generic PC power supply?
Do not assume it is compatible. Compare every required DC output, current rating, connector and pinout, protection, and mounting against the exact machine. A qualified technician should approve any substitution.
What current rating does my machine need?
There is no universal “10A at 12V” answer. Use the actual board, motors, lights, payment devices, and other loads to determine each output's required voltage and current, including startup and operating demands, according to the component specifications.
Can I use a machine in a country with a different mains voltage?
Check the entire machine's input rating, supply, switch, fuse, other mains-powered components, plug, and local requirements. A wide-input supply label alone does not verify the complete cabinet. Ask a qualified person to confirm before connecting it.
How do I know whether a supply is faulty?
Symptoms such as resets or weak motion do not prove a supply has failed. A qualified technician should compare the actual output behavior under the model's test procedure with its rated specifications and check wiring, connectors, load, and other possible causes. Do not use a universal five-percent threshold as a diagnosis.
