What Is a Gantry? Claw Machine Gantry Explained
A gantry is the mechanical assembly inside a claw crane machine that moves the claw horizontally across the prize field. It consists of two perpendicular rail systems — the X-axis (left/right) and Y-axis (forward/backward) — driven by electric motors and controlled by the machine's main board.
The gantry is the core mechanical component that determines positioning accuracy and long-term machine reliability.
How Does a Gantry Work?
- When a player moves the joystick, the main board sends signals to the X and Y axis motors.
- The motors drive a carriage along steel or aluminum rails via toothed belts.
- When the player presses the drop button, the Z-axis motor lowers the claw assembly vertically.
- After the grab attempt, the claw returns to its home position above the prize chute.
The three axes work together to give the claw full 3D movement within the cabinet.
Gantry Components
| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| X-axis rail | Guides left/right movement |
| Y-axis rail | Guides forward/backward movement |
| Z-axis motor | Raises and lowers the claw |
| Drive belt | Transfers motor rotation to carriage movement |
| Carriage/bearing | Slides along the rail smoothly |
| Limit switch | Stops movement at rail boundaries |
Why Does Gantry Quality Matter?
- Positioning accuracy — a worn or misaligned gantry causes the claw to drift, reducing player satisfaction
- Machine uptime — gantry failures are one of the top causes of claw machine downtime
- Noise level — clean, lubricated rails run quietly; dirty rails produce grinding and clicking
- Component lifespan — poor rail alignment accelerates belt and motor wear
Hiclawcrane gantry assemblies use stainless steel rails with tool-free replacement design for fast field servicing.
Gantry Maintenance Schedule
| Frequency | Task |
|---|---|
| Monthly | Wipe rails clean, apply light lubricant |
| Monthly | Check belt tension on X and Y axis |
| Quarterly | Inspect carriage bearings for wear |
| As needed | Recalibrate home position after any motor or belt replacement |
