What Is a Claw Machine? Definition, How It Works & Types
A claw machine is a coin-operated arcade machine in which a player uses a joystick to position a mechanical claw over a prize field, then drops the claw to attempt to grab a prize. Also known as a claw crane, crane game, toy catcher, or UFO catcher.
Claw machines are one of the most widely deployed amusement devices in the world — found in shopping malls, arcades, bowling alleys, family entertainment centers (FECs), restaurants, and hotels.
How Does a Claw Machine Work?
The basic play sequence on every claw machine follows the same steps:
- The player inserts a coin, token, or bill to start a timed session.
- Using a joystick, the player moves the claw along the X-axis (left/right) and Y-axis (forward/backward) above the prize field.
- When ready, the player presses the drop button — the claw descends on the Z-axis, closes around a prize, and returns to the prize chute.
- If the claw holds the prize successfully, it drops into the prize chute and the player wins.
The key operator-controlled variable is claw strength — most commercial machines use a configurable win rate (e.g., 1-in-10 plays) where the claw only grips at full strength on a set number of plays.
Why Are Claw Machines Popular with Operators?
Claw machines are among the most profitable amusement machines per square foot:
- No staff required — fully unattended operation
- Low operating costs — minimal electricity (~35W), no consumables except prizes
- Fast payback — many operators break even within 4–8 weeks in good locations
- Scalable — one operator can manage a fleet of 10–50+ machines
- Recession-resistant — low-cost entertainment holds up in economic downturns
