How to Build a DIY Claw Machine: Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Building your own claw machine from a DIY kit is one of the most rewarding projects for arcade enthusiasts and operators alike. This step-by-step guide walks you through the complete assembly process — from unboxing to your first test play.

What You Need

  • Hiclawcrane DIY claw machine kit (53cm or 71cm gantry)
  • Phillips and flathead screwdrivers
  • Hex key / Allen wrench set
  • Wire stripper (if any wiring adjustments needed)
  • Multimeter (recommended for electrical checks)
  • 2–4 hours of assembly time

Step 1: Unbox and Inventory Components

Before starting assembly, lay out all components and check against the parts list in your manual:

  • Steel frame panels (front, back, sides, top, base)
  • Gantry rail assembly (X and Y axis)
  • Claw mechanism and Z-axis motor
  • Control board (PCB)
  • Joystick and buttons
  • Coin acceptor
  • Power supply unit
  • LED strips and wiring harness
  • Acrylic panels
  • Hardware bag (screws, nuts, brackets)

Step 2: Assemble the Frame

  1. Start with the base plate — attach leveling feet to the four corners
  2. Attach the rear panel to the base using the provided brackets and screws
  3. Attach the two side panels
  4. Attach the front panel (leave the coin acceptor slot open for now)
  5. Attach the top panel
  6. Check all joints are square and tighten all screws firmly

Step 3: Install the Gantry Rail System

  1. Mount the Y-axis rail along the top of the cabinet interior
  2. Slide the X-axis carriage onto the Y-axis rail
  3. Mount the X-axis motor and connect the drive belt
  4. Mount the Y-axis motor and connect the drive belt
  5. Install limit switches at both ends of each axis
  6. Attach the Z-axis motor assembly to the X-axis carriage

Step 4: Install the Claw Mechanism

  1. Attach the claw head to the Z-axis motor shaft
  2. Thread the claw cable through the pulley system
  3. Connect the claw solenoid wiring
  4. Adjust claw finger tension using the adjustment spring

Step 5: Install the Control Board

  1. Mount the PCB to the designated bracket inside the cabinet
  2. Connect the wiring harness to the PCB connectors (color-coded)
  3. Connect X/Y/Z axis motor wires
  4. Connect limit switch wires
  5. Connect joystick and button wires
  6. Connect coin acceptor signal wire
  7. Connect LED strip wires
  8. Connect power supply output to PCB power input

Step 6: Install the Coin Acceptor

  1. Insert coin acceptor into the front panel slot from inside
  2. Secure with mounting screws
  3. Connect power and signal wires to PCB
  4. Calibrate with sample coins after power-on

Step 7: Install Acrylic Panels and LEDs

  1. Attach acrylic display panels to the front and sides
  2. Run LED strips along the interior top and sides
  3. Connect LED controller to power supply

Step 8: Power On and Test

  1. Double-check all wiring connections before powering on
  2. Power on and verify LED lighting works
  3. Test joystick movement in all directions
  4. Test claw drop and grip
  5. Calibrate coin acceptor with 10 test coins
  6. Set claw strength and play time via operator menu
  7. Load prizes and do a full test play

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does assembly take?
Most customers complete assembly in 2–4 hours. First-time builders may take up to 6 hours.

Do I need any special tools?
No special tools required — standard screwdrivers and hex keys are sufficient. A multimeter is helpful for electrical troubleshooting but not required.
